Elizabeth Marsh, Ph.D.

Dr. Marsh runs the Marsh Memory Lab at Duke, where she is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience. She received her Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from Stanford University and did her postdoctoral work at Washington University in St. Louis. Her recent work examines how student acquire, maintain, update, and apply their knowledge, with specific interests in learning from non-traditional sources, correcting student misconceptions, essay-writing, and personalized learning. Other research interests include false memories and autobiographical memory.

Dr. Marsh's work has been supported by the U.S. Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, the James S. McDonnell Foundation, and the Spencer Foundation.

Post-Doctoral Researchers

Charles Davis, Ph.D.

Charles received his PhD in Psychological Science in 2021 from the University of Connecticut, where he worked with Dr. Eiling Yee. Since then, he has held teaching and research positions at Yale University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and Duke University, and is now a postdoctoral associate in the Marsh Lab at Duke. He received his BA in Psychology from Brock University in Canada.

Charles is interested in semantic memory (what do we know about the meaning of objects like “pine” or concepts like “equity”) and how it is influenced by other systems, like sensation and perception (what it’s like to smell or touch a pine), episodic memory (our specific experiences with equity), and social-linguistic experiences (e.g., how we engage with concepts in media).

Graduate Students

Anna Smith, M.A

After receiving her B.A. in Cognitive Science from Carleton College in 2017, Anna spent two years working with Dr. Michael Yassa at UCI on studies of episodic memory mechanisms and performance trajectories associated with healthy and disordered aging. At Duke, Anna’s research centers around what artistic creation and reception can tell us about basic cognitive processes, including attention and memory. For her dissertation work, she is interested in the imaginative and recollective aspects of art viewing; specifically, the contributions of autobiographical memory to aesthetic experience.

Joyce Park, B.A

Joyce Park received her B.A. in Psychology with a double minor in Cognitive Science and French from the University of Waterloo in 2021. During her time at the University of Waterloo, she worked with Dr. Evan Risko and the Cognition and Natural Behaviour Lab to study cognitive offloading and the design of online lectures. As of Fall 2022, Joyce is a graduate student in the Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience PhD program at Duke University. Joyce is interested in how externalizing information (e.g., using smartphones and technology) influences memory, metacognition, and learning.

Joshua Stivers, B.S

As a Duke undergraduate, Joshua Stivers worked in the lab of Dr Marty Woldorff, studying the temporal dynamics of human attention. After receiving his B.S. in Neuroscience in 2014, he worked in the lab of Virginia de Sa at UCSD, assisting in the development of Brain-Computer Interfaces intended for individuals unable to use traditional devices like keyboards, mice or eye trackers. Joshua joined the Marsh Lab as a graduate student in 2021, where he studies context-dependence in category learning: when and how the learning environment influences the acquisition and use of object information.

Undergraduate Research Assistants

Skylar Hughes

Skylar Hughes is rising senior at Duke University, majoring in Psychology with a certificate in Policy Journalism and Media Studies. She has been a research assistant at the lab for the past two years, assisting with literature review, response coding, and experimental research tasks. A student journalist by training, her research interests lie at the intersection of cognitive psychology and digital misinformation. Her current senior thesis explores whether information corrections paired with visual stimuli are more effective when attention is divided. Upon graduation, Skylar hopes to combine her experience as both a journalist and a psychological researcher to study the interdisciplinary effects of misinformation in the 21st century.
